Splitting Liquid Shapes — cell division in After Effects

Evan Abrams (ECAbrams) is one of the most technically rigorous After Effects educators. This tutorial tackles organic shape splitting — simulating cell division — using shape layers and expressions rather than plugins. The result is a reusable, parametric system.

What makes Abrams's approach valuable academically is his emphasis on understanding the underlying mechanics rather than memorizing steps. This tutorial is a strong example of motion design thinking: identifying the problem and building a systematic solution.
